Finding quality Australian homeschool resources can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when you're trying to balance curriculum requirements with your child's unique interests and learning style.
To learn more about one of the largest resource libraries available to Australian families, I recently sat down with Jacinta, Twinkl's Home Education Segment Manager. As well as working for Twinkl, Jacinta is a homeschooling parent herself, giving her a unique perspective on what families are looking for and how the platform supports home education.
Our conversation covered everything from curriculum planning and phonics to secondary resources and unit studies. Here's what I learned.
More Than Just Printable Worksheets
One of the first questions I asked Jacinta was how she would describe Twinkl to someone who had never used it before.
She explained that while many people think of Twinkl as a printable worksheet website, it has evolved into a comprehensive online learning platform with more than one million educational resources.
As Jacinta put it,
“We're not just printable worksheets… we also have interactive activities, videos, games, planning tools and complete teaching programs.”
Resources Include:
- Printable activities and worksheets
- Interactive learning experiences
- Educational games and videos
- Complete teaching programs
- Planning tools
- PowerPoint presentations
- Assessment ideas
- Extension activities
Every resource is written by qualified teachers and educational specialists, and many are aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
What stood out most during our conversation was the platform's flexibility.
“Twinkl can be as flexible as you need it to be.”
Some families use Twinkl alongside another curriculum, while others build their entire homeschool program around it. Whether you're looking for a single activity on fractions or dinosaurs, or planning an entire year's learning, Jacinta explained that the resources are designed to save parents time by keeping everything in one place.
Supporting Australian Homeschool Families
I was also curious about Jacinta's role within Twinkl.
She explained that as Home Education Segment Manager, her focus is understanding the needs of Australian homeschooling families and ensuring those needs are represented within the company.
Her work includes creating homeschool guides and planners, writing newsletters and blogs, managing Twinkl's homeschooling Facebook community, building partnerships within the homeschool community and helping develop resources specifically for Australian home educators.
One thing I appreciated was hearing how closely Twinkl listens to its community. Jacinta explained that questions and feedback from homeschooling parents are regularly shared within the company to help improve resources and better support families.

Taking the Guesswork Out of Planning
One feature I was particularly interested in was Twinkl PlanIt.
I asked Jacinta how it differs from simply downloading individual worksheets.
She explained that PlanIt provides structured lesson packs that guide parents through exactly what to teach, including learning objectives, teaching notes, PowerPoint presentations, printable activities, assessment ideas and extension tasks.
As she described it, PlanIt helps “take the guesswork out of the plan.”
Because the lessons are mapped to the Australian Curriculum, parents can feel confident they're covering key learning outcomes while still adapting lessons to suit their child's pace and interests.
Importantly, families aren't expected to follow every lesson exactly. Parents can use an entire unit, select individual lessons or simply dip in and out as needed.
Can Twinkl Teach Your Child to Read?
Teaching children to read is one of the biggest questions new homeschooling parents ask, so I put that question directly to Jacinta.
I asked whether a parent could confidently use Twinkl Phonics as their child's complete reading program.
Her response was immediate.
“The easy answer to that is absolutely.”
Twinkl Phonics is a complete systematic synthetic phonics program designed to teach children from the very beginning of their reading journey.
The program includes:
- Daily lesson plans
- Interactive sound presentations
- Decodable readers
- Handwriting activities
- Games
- Parent teaching guidance
One point Jacinta emphasised was that parents don't need to be reading experts themselves.
“The lessons explain exactly the order of what sounds to teach, how to teach it, how to practise it, and how to know when your child's ready to move on.”
Families can also choose between printable Rhino Readers, interactive digital readers or printed books that complement the phonics program.
Resources Beyond the Primary Years
Secondary homeschool resources can often be difficult to find, so I was keen to explore what Twinkl offers older students.
Jacinta introduced me to Twinkl Beyond, which supports learning through to approximately Year 9.
Subjects include English, mathematics, science, history, geography, health and physical education, digital technologies, languages and the arts.
Rather than focusing solely on worksheets, the collection includes inquiry projects, writing tasks, interactive activities, study guides and teaching notes that help parents confidently teach more complex concepts.
Jacinta also shared that Beyond is one of Twinkl's fastest-growing collections, allowing families to continue using the platform well into the secondary years.

Learning Through Integrated Units
Another feature I wanted to explore was Twinkl's Integrated Units.
As someone who enjoys themed learning, I asked how these units differ from traditional lesson plans.
Jacinta explained that instead of teaching subjects separately, the units use a central theme, such as the Great Barrier Reef or sustainability, to connect learning across English, mathematics, science, humanities and other curriculum areas.
Most units cover around ten weeks of learning, although families are free to move at their own pace and choose only the activities that suit their children.
She also highlighted Twinkl's Early Years resources for younger siblings, along with newer interactive features, including AI activities that allow students to interact with historical figures as part of their learning.
Getting Started with Twinkl
With more than one million resources available, I admitted to Jacinta that the size of the platform could feel overwhelming for new members.
She explained that every new member receives a step-by-step guide showing them where to begin, while Twinkl Cares provides 24-hour customer support. Twinkl is also building a library of YouTube tutorials to help parents confidently use different areas of the platform.
Listen or Watch My Chat with Jacinta
If there was one message that came through consistently during my conversation with Jacinta, it was flexibility.
Whether you're looking for a complete curriculum, structured phonics instruction, secondary learning resources or simply activities to support your existing homeschool program, Twinkl allows families to use the platform in a way that suits their own approach to learning.
For anyone searching for comprehensive Australian homeschool resources, it's easy to see why Twinkl has become such a popular choice among homeschooling families. To find out more about Twinkl, visit their listing in the Homeschool Directory.
