My First Impression
When I first opened the Linear Abacus Games book I must admit that my first reaction was huh?! So I made myself a cup of coffee and took another look. My huh? soon became oh! as everything started to make sense.
The information is presented clearly on each page with simple explanations of terms and clear diagrams.
By explaining all the vocabulary and mechanics in the beginning of the book the authors ensure it is easy for parents and teaches to implement.
The Games
The games themselves are fun to play with a clear objective and few rules. They are easy to learn and require minimal set up. Just what a busy homeschool parent like myself is looking for.
We started with 30 beads down. I played first wtih my 13 year old as he saw me reading the book and asked what I was doing. he said the game was fun and easy to learn
We played with his younger brother (10 years old) with equal success.
30 Beads up and Add Up Beads followed, but my favourite to play with the boys was, Make It Balance.

The challenge of using different operations to make the sides balance was difficult enough for everyone without being so difficult that it became frustrating.
Suitable for Multiple Ages
The Linear Abacus Games book pack can be used with a range of ages and abilities, which makes it perfect for the multi age environment of homeschooling.
There are games for all levels suitable for introducing concepts and consolidating acquired skills.
I love that the Linear Abacus system can grow with your kids from simple addition and place value to square numbers.
Practical for Homeschooling
Having everything together in a sturdy box makes it portable, which is great when you are waiting for siblings to finish an activity or appointment.
All in all we found this a fun and useful resource to have on hand.
