Work Sync

Career Exploration for Homeschooling Families

Work Sync is an Australian-developed, interactive online career exploration resource that helps young people discover what interests them and explore where those interests could lead.

One of home education’s great strengths is giving young people room to discover what motivates them, with parents guiding and supporting that discovery. When the drive comes from within, it gives them a reason of their own to invest effort and keep going. Work Sync brings that same philosophy to career planning for teens, helping young people discover what draws them to different kinds of work and where that interest could lead.

Before expecting young people to choose a future direction, Work Sync broadens their understanding of what is possible. Through a thematic exploration of work activities, young people take the lead, expressing what appeals to them, what does not and what they are unsure about.

Designed primarily for Grade 10 and above, Work Sync can be used independently from Grade 9, or from around age 12-13 with a parent or mentor.

A structured way to explore the world of work

Grounded in established vocational psychology research, Work Sync organises the world of work into either Work Themes and 24 Work Domains, encompassing the breadth of work activities.

The framework helps young people recognise patterns in their interests before focusing on individual occupations, courses or pathways.

DISCOVER: See work activities in action

Interest Discovery introduces young people to 24 short, narrated and captioned videos, each showing related work activities within one Work Domain.

After each video, they tap a tick if the activities interest them, a cross if they do not, or a question mark if they are unsure. There are no written answers to produce, and no need to know job titles or have a career in mind.

Independent discovery typically takes 12-15 minutes. The visual format gives young people something concrete to respond to, making it approachable for different reading confidence and learning preferences.

ALIGN: Understand their work interests

Their responses generate a personalised nine-page Work Interest Summary, which they can download, revisit and share.

The summary shows what appeals, what holds less interest and where uncertainty invites further exploration. Young people gain greater self-awareness and language to describe the kinds of work that attract them.

NAVIGATE: Connect interests with occupations

The interactive Wayfinder draws on more than 1,400 occupations, connecting work interests with real possibilities, including roles young people may never have known existed.

They can investigate what different occupations involve, compare options and save those they want to explore further. Their saved list provides something concrete to build on as their thinking develops.

Bring career exploration into learning at home

Explore alongside your young person or discuss the summary and occupations they choose to share. What caught their attention? Why does an activity appeal? What would they like to experience or learn more about?

Use these insights to guide learning projects, subject choices, work experience and exploration of further study, vocational education, apprenticeships or early employment. No specialist career knowledge is needed, and your young person remains at the centre of the process.

For families thinking about career planning for teens, Work Sync provides a practical starting point for exploring possibilities without the pressure of making an immediate decision about the future.

They can return, rewatch videos, change responses and continue exploring and saving occupations as new experiences shape their interests.

Access and pricing

Work Sync works on phones, tablets and computers. Individual access costs $99 including GSt for one participant, with a one-time payment, ongoing access and no subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Work Sync, and how does it work?

Work Sync is an interactive career exploration and education tool, developed by Dr Cheryl Sykes and informed by research into vocational interests and motivation. It helps your child discover the breadth of the world of work and recognise the activities that appeal to them.

The approach centres on a simple idea: discovering work that interests your child can give learning and skill development a purpose they value.

Your child explores 24 short, narrated and captioned videos, each introducing a group of related work activities. Together, these provide a broad, organised view of work, opening up possibilities beyond the occupations they already know.

The discovery stage is video based, with no set reading level required. Your child watches, listens and responds with a tick, cross or question mark. There are no written answers or forced choices between interests, and they can remain unsure.

Their personalised Work Interest Summary helps them recognise patterns in what appeals. Wayfinder connects those interests with occupations they can investigate and save.

This gives your child both a broader understanding of work and a way to describe their interests. Their summary supports ongoing exploration; it doesn’t assign a fixed personality label or decide their future. They can return, change their responses and continue discovering as their experiences grow.

Can my child use Work Sync independently, and how can I support them?

From around age 14, your child can use Work Sync independently. You don’t need to teach the content or sit beside them, though they may welcome your help or want to discuss something they’ve discovered.

For children around 12–13, we suggest exploring together with a parent or mentor who can help them understand unfamiliar work activities and talk through their discoveries.

At either age, your child makes their own responses and identifies what interests them.

You’ll also have access to the Work Sync Map. Its everyday examples explain the eight Work Themes and 24 Work Domains, giving you a shared framework for discussing the results your child chooses to share. No specialist career knowledge is needed.

You can help them build on a discovery through a project, a visit, meeting someone who does that work, or investigating work experience, study or training. Their interests give you a starting point for supporting learning and conversations about life after homeschooling.
