Thoughts from our family use

The Wonderland of Nature by Nuri Mass was a staple in our homeschool journey, and honestly, it’s a gem that transformed our backyard into an adventure-filled nature sanctuary. If you’re on the lookout for a nature study resource that will get your kids outside, exploring, and truly excited about the natural world around them, this book is a winner. The following is our family review of The Wonderland of Nature.

Mass has a way of presenting the natural world that feels like a storybook unfolding right in front of you. Each chapter dives into a different aspect of nature—whether it’s insects, plants, or other critters—and it feels like you’re uncovering secrets of the wild.

I particularly loved that we didn’t need a plethora of resources for this one. It really is a matter of opening the book and reading the next chapter. Any extra additions you add to this are completely optional and totally up to you.

Wonderland of Nature Study Adventures In Our Backyard

One of the most exciting parts of using this book was how it motivated my children to get outside and explore. After each reading, they’d grab their nature journals, a pencil, and maybe a magnifying glass or their mini bug enclosure, then head out to the backyard to try to find the very insects and plants we’d been reading about. Our backyard became a playground for discovery, and I loved seeing their faces light up when they’d make a “nature find.”

A Hands-On Nature Study Experience

What I loved most about The Wonderland of Nature was how it encouraged my kids to not only observe nature but to document it creatively. My children filled pages of their nature journals with detailed observations, sketches, and even tiny poems about what they’d seen. They also got to practice and improve on their artistic ability, drawing colourful and detailed pictures of the insects and plants they encountered, inspired by Nuri Mass’s descriptions.

These nature drawings became a significant part of their learning, and they still treasure them today as a reminder of those early homeschooling days. It wasn’t just about reading and regurgitating facts—it was about connecting with nature and expressing that connection in their own unique way. Exactly how learning should be!

A Resource That Keeps On Giving

The book covers so many topics, and we often found ourselves returning to it over the years as the seasons change. It helped foster a love of learning about the natural world in my children—something that has stuck with them long after we closed the pages for the last time, and has remained an important part of our home library.

Nature Study is a Fun & Educational Experience for the Whole Family

For homeschoolers looking for an all-in-one nature study guide, The Wonderland of Nature is both fun and educational. It’s accessible enough for younger kids to enjoy while still offering plenty of depth for older children to dive into. It is flexible enough that you can easily add in extra resources and dive as deep into the topics a you wish. We made it a family experience, and that’s what I think really sets this book apart—it encourages a shared love of discovery. Whether you’re going on backyard bug hunts or drawing your favourite plants and animals, the book offers so many opportunities to bring the family together around a shared love of nature.

If you want to turn your homeschooling days into a nature-filled adventure, The Wonderland of Nature is the perfect companion. Trust me, once you get started, you won’t look at your backyard the same way again!
