Student Background
We used the D1 Milestone Maths workbook for an average Year 3 student. My 9-year-old son is a confident mathematician who has been homeschooling since Term 3 of Year 1. This Milestone Maths review is our experience with the program.
Although he is officially working at a Year 4 or 5 level, he sometimes rushes his work and makes careless mistakes. I noticed a few gaps in his knowledge of mathematical concepts. He also does all calculations in his head and forgets to show his working.
Lesson Structure and Format
The daily lesson format of new concepts, review, practice, and drills gives ample time to consolidate skills. It also allows neurodiverse kids, like my son, to become familiar with the format and work independently. The pages are well set out and not overcrowded, so the student doesn’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of work to do.

Skill Development Over Time
The first time doing the drills, he took ages despite knowing the answers immediately. However, as the weeks progressed, he worked much faster and even asked for a timer.
Ease of Use for Parents
The lessons require very little setup, which I personally love. Most days I was able to simply hand him the workbook and off he went. This is invaluable when homeschooling multiple children.
The instructions were always clear and concise. So often maths workbooks are quite wordy, which is difficult for less confident readers.
Flexibility in Scheduling
Having four lessons per week allows for a catch-up day if needed when life gets busy. I felt less pressure to get through the workbook. Alternatively, you could do more than one lesson per day if that suits your child’s learning style. The flexibility is great.

Student Engagement and Progress
My son enjoyed using the D1 workbook this term. He liked being able to work independently with a familiar, consistent format.
I noticed that he was making careless mistakes less often and completing the lessons faster as the term progressed.
By the end of the term, he was averaging 20 minutes per lesson, depending on the new skill introduced, compared to around 40 minutes at the start of the term.
Suitability for Different Learning Styles
For kids who enjoy bookwork, the workbook could be used as part of a longer lesson. For families who do more practical activities, the 3–4 page lessons fit perfectly into a busy day.
Additional Resources
The additional resources included with the workbook were useful for the lessons and simple to use and store. The flashcards can be used in a variety of ways, which makes them valuable as a standalone resource, not just to be used in conjunction with the lessons in the workbook.

Overall Experience with Milestone Maths
Overall, we enjoyed using the Milestone Maths program. It was a very low-stress system that showed my son progressing through the concepts covered in the workbook.
