Overview of Our Experience
We were fortunate to review the Milestone Maths C1 program. The materials are well developed, and the Sumstixs and flashcards were particularly helpful in providing tactile, sensory input for my child.
Learner Context
My child is 7 years old and has been diagnosed with Autism and ADHD (inattentive). He had a solid grasp of maths concepts before starting, but lacked the stamina to achieve mastery unless learning involved movement or strong engagement. This Milestone Maths review reflects our specific experience and may not apply to all learners.
Lesson Structure & Independence
- Daily lessons are clearly presented and flow logically.
- The program assumes a level of learner independence, which we found challenging.
- For children with motor planning difficulties or attention challenges, achieving this independence may be difficult.
Drills, Engagement & Sensory Needs
- Daily sessions include 45+ drills, which may suit learners who enjoy repetition and beating personal bests.
- This approach did not engage my child.
- We saw greater success using tactile materials like sticks and leaves to support addition.

Visual Design & Curiosity
- The booklet is black and white and lacked visual elements to spark excitement.
- Our learning style involves asking “why” questions.
- I often needed to create extension activities using real-life contexts, such as cooking and sharing biscuits for number bonds.
Outcomes & Final Thoughts
I did see improvements in my child’s foundational maths skills. I will continue using the concepts from Milestone Maths as lesson introductions, expanding them to create a more engaging, curiosity-driven learning environment.
Best Suited For
This program is best suited to children who:
- Thrive on structure and mastery-based learning
- Enjoy drills and immediate feedback
- Feel motivated by repetition and progress tracking
It may have less holding power for highly curious, exploratory learners who learn best through movement, discussion, and real-world connections.
