We have been using the Milestone Maths Level B3 since October. My son is 6 years old (end of Grade One). He has generally had a good head for maths, but hadn’t had any formal maths learning before starting this program.
Like many children his age, he still struggles to concentrate for long periods. However, the structure of Milestone Maths has really helped improve this.
How We Use Milestone Maths in Our Homeschool
We use Milestone Maths 3–4 lessons per week. At his age, much of our learning is centred around social and natural experiences such as meetups, co-ops, farm activities and outdoor play. Introducing maths as a structured activity has been a helpful addition to our otherwise relaxed homeschool style.
When we first started, he was quite resistant to anything structured. I think this resistance may have been partly because he dislikes reading practice (perhaps influenced by having a best friend who is a strong reader). However, after a few days, he realised that he enjoys maths and is now happy to come and start a lesson.
This has worked well for us because we already prioritise:
- Science
- Sport
- The arts
We plan to gradually increase structured learning as he gets older, and Milestone Maths has provided a gentle starting point.
Lesson Structure and Independence
Each session lasts about 30 minutes. Our typical lesson looks like this:
- We read through the lesson together.
- He completes most of the work independently.
- A parent stays nearby to answer occasional questions.
He doesn’t always complete both the lesson and the review section in one sitting. We’ve found that starting the next lesson midway through the review helps reinforce previous skills, so we don’t draw a strict distinction between the two.
One of the strengths of the program is that the books are easy to set up and understand. There is very little preparation required.

Real-Life Application and Skill Development
One of the biggest benefits noted in this Milestone Maths review has been seeing him apply what he learns in everyday life, including:
- Shopping
- Cooking
- Planting
Before using the books, we were incorporating maths naturally into daily life but weren’t sure what level we should be aiming for. We also didn’t have the structure to repeat concepts until he felt confident.
For example:
- He could tell me that 3 + 6 = 9.
- But he couldn’t reverse that to understand that 9 – 6 = 3.
Through the lessons, he is quickly beginning to grasp these connections.
Even more importantly, he is starting to understand that maths follows patterns. Recently, during a car trip, he realised that if 7 + 2 = 9, then 70 + 20 = 90 — a significant conceptual leap for his age.
Noticeable Benefits After a Break
We took a few weeks’ holiday and paused lessons. When we returned, we noticed:
- His handwriting had declined.
- His concentration span had shortened.
Both gradually improved once we resumed Milestone Maths, clearly highlighting the value of consistent structured practice.
What He Enjoys (and What He Doesn’t)
He particularly enjoys:
- The number chart to 120
- Using numbers with increasing confidence
He is not especially interested in the Sumstix at this stage. He will use them if encouraged but doesn’t seem to need them right now. I expect this may change as his level increases and the numbers become larger.

Layout, Clarity and Teaching Approach
I found the Milestone Maths program to generally offer:
- Clear instructions
- Logical sequencing
- Good repetition from different angles
For example, children might solve equations and then draw petals on a flower to represent those equations visually.
Initially, I found the pages a little plain, as they don’t contain a lot of colour or decorative elements. However, I’ve discovered that this actually helps him focus, as there are fewer distractions from the maths itself.
Occasionally, I find a question that isn’t immediately clear to me (such as a “draw a rainbow” maths question). However, the repetition within the program usually makes new question types feel familiar after a few lessons.
My Final Thoughts in This Milestone Maths Review
We have found Milestone Maths to be a valuable addition of structure to our fairly relaxed homeschool style. It has:
- Given us a clear starting point for formal maths
- Provided repetition until confidence develops
- Helped broaden the range of ways our son learns
While I strongly believe in allowing each child to learn at their own pace, it has also been reassuring to understand what his traditionally schooled peers may be covering and to give him the opportunity to explore those same concepts.
We will definitely continue using Milestone Maths and would recommend it to other homeschool families as a strong structured add-on to their program.
