Milestone Maths Homeschool Curriculum: Parent Review Level B1

Background and Learning Needs

My daughter is 5 years old and has a foundation in homeschool prep. For the first half of prep, we concentrated on reading, and for the final half, we focused heavily on maths. We completed her prep course work two weeks before starting this Milestone Maths B1 review, to ensure she felt rejuvenated and ready for something new. She finished prep level maths feeling confident and prepared for more challenging material.

Her learning needs include movement and manipulatives, minimal verbal instructions, and large, clear fonts and images. She has high intrinsic motivation to complete tasks, but this can wane if her visual and kinesthetic learning preferences are not accommodated. Overall, she is currently above average in mathematical understanding.

Program Overview

Milestone Maths B1 contains 40 lessons, which we completed four times a week, fitting well around our homeschool co-op, excursions, and a 10-week term structure for other subjects.

The workbook layout is excellent, with each lesson displayed on two pages: the left page for new learning concepts and the right page for review and practice. My daughter enjoyed seeing her lesson at a glance and tracking her progress, which supported her motivation. Early review activities concluded with visually appealing and fun exercises.

Parental guidance is provided through milestone images at the start of chapters and checkpoint images at the end, helping me monitor comprehension without extensive additional revision. This guidance was novel and much appreciated.

Why This Homeschool Maths Program Works

Milestone Maths B1 offers a visually engaging, hands-on learning experience. The text is clear, fonts are large enough to read from across the table, and instructions are concise, which is perfect for independent learning.

Parent notes include theory, practical applications, lesson frequency, and implementation tips, logically organised under milestones. Special Teaching Directions provide detailed instructions for each lesson. Manipulatives such as Cuisenaire Rods (Sumstix) and number cards were used in every lesson, enhancing engagement.

My daughter quickly adapted to the lessons, often completing exercises independently. Lessons initially took around 15 minutes, but averaged 10 minutes after lesson 16. She was able to perform addition calculations mentally, showing significant progress.

Student Progress

The concise lesson layout helped my daughter tackle maths even when tired. Milestones were mastered quickly with minimal review. The consistent lesson format allowed her to anticipate tasks, and manipulatives reinforced concepts effectively. Real-world maths connections from parental instructions were helpful for contextual learning.

Strengths of the Milestone Maths Curriculum

  • Strong scope and sequence with clear parental guidance
  • Mobile spiral-bound booklets for flexible use
  • Durable manipulatives and number cards
  • Supports homeschooling families with multiple children
  • Lessons can be completed away from the main table
  • Engaging, hands-on approach that nurtures intrinsic motivation

Limitations & Suggestions

Some lesson concepts were already familiar to our child, suggesting that advanced learners may need the next level of workbooks. Improvements could include adding “altogether” in story problems, numbered boxes for sequences, and more challenge questions to create celebratory moments for learners.

Who This Program Is Best For

Milestone Maths is ideal for students with average maths understanding who thrive with kinesthetic learning and hands on activities. It suits parents who want clear guidance on topics, scope, sequence, and practical teaching ideas. Children with strong maths skills may find it less challenging and could prefer going up a level.

Final Recommendation

Milestone Maths is a concise, clear, and hands on homeschool maths program that is highly effective for parents managing multiple children. Lessons are engaging, easy to implement, and structured for independent learning. We would continue using this program and strongly recommend it to other homeschooling families.
