Finding Support in Your Homeschool Journey
When we first started homeschooling four years ago, I felt a lot of pressure to do everything myself. While that is certainly possible, in my experience, it can be harder in the long run. There are so many quality resources out there that can add real value to your homeschooling journey, and they do not have to cost the earth. There is something to suit every budget, and it is perfectly okay not to do it all on your own.
The Joy of Online Classes
At Mind Stretchers, I run online science and literacy classes for 8–12-year-olds. The families who return each term often tell me how much their kids enjoy the sessions. The classes spark fun, meaningful conversations and often lead to follow-up activities at home. I see the kids having fun and getting involved, whether it is through discussion, hands-on activities, or sharing their ideas, and they tell me what they enjoy too. Sometimes it is simply that they enjoyed “everything,” or I will hear, “Noooo… it is the last class of the term!” which speaks volumes.
In many of my classes, kids may start with their cameras off, which is completely fine. They join the conversation through the chat and often put their camera on when they feel comfortable. I make sure that kids can participate in whatever way feels right for them.

Learning Through Science
In science sessions, it is fantastic to see kids getting hands-on. They might make playdough models of cells, test out bird beak adaptations, or build constructions to survive a jelly earthquake. They are busy making predictions, sharing their observations, and connecting with other kids across Australia, all while exploring engaging science topics.
Research shows that the best online homeschool classes, when designed with interaction and engaging content, can boost student motivation and engagement, especially when psychological needs like autonomy and competence are supported (BMC Psychology, 2025).
Building Confidence in Literacy
In literacy classes, parents often ask if the sessions are suitable for kids who do not like to write. The answer is yes, because the goal is to inspire, not pressure. These classes aim to spark interest, build confidence, and show that writing can have purpose and joy. Kids are not put on the spot and can share at their own pace.
