Homeschool Art Lessons Through Nature Study & Observation

G’day! I’m Cassie, a homeschooling mum of three with 12 years of experience, and over that time homeschool art lessons have become one of the most unexpected and meaningful parts of our journey. As a family, we have absolutely loved homeschooling. Don’t get me wrong… there have been days when I’ve wanted to throw it all in! But as I draw near to the end of our journey, one of the things I am most thankful for is the sheer volume of amazing things we have learned together about our world.

Over the years, we’ve gone off on all sorts of learning tangents. One of those was learning to draw using a wonderful book I had discovered. During that process, I realised that I actually loved to draw. Around the same time, through a series of experiences (many of them connected to homeschool life), I found myself fascinated by creatures of all kinds — which was surprising, given I had a lifelong fear of anything creepy or crawly!

As I learned more about the animals I was drawing, my awe of who God is grew. Drawing, learning, faith, and curiosity began to weave together naturally, and what started as simple homeschool art lessons became something much deeper and more meaningful for our family.

Why Observation Matters in Homeschool Art Lessons

Drawing is a fantastic skill to learn, but what truly matters is the art of observation. We so often rush through life, barely taking in what’s around us — offering a quick glance and a “that’s nice” before moving on.

If we really want to see what’s around us, we need to train ourselves to observe carefully. That means noticing shapes, colours, shadows, and highlights. It means paying attention to texture, smell, sound (if any), and asking thoughtful questions about what we’re looking at.

Once we slow down and observe, even something like a mushroom becomes less intimidating. It’s no longer “hard to draw” — it becomes a simple rectangle with a semi-circle on top. Observation turns complexity into confidence, especially within art and nature study for homeschool.

Learning To Draw Without Perfection Pressure

And here’s the best news — you can start at any age!

Your children’s drawings (and yours!) do not have to be perfect. They don’t need to look like anyone else’s work. What matters most is encouragement, shared enjoyment, and allowing space to grow.

These types of homeschool art lessons are perfect for days when you need to slow down, shift your routine, or gently refocus as a family. They bring connection without pressure and learning without overwhelm.

Art & Nature Study For Homeschool Families

Finally, can I encourage you to get yourself and your children outside, it is good for all of us!

Explore. Observe. Draw.

Nature provides endless inspiration and is a beautiful foundation for art and nature study for homeschool families. Being outdoors nurtures creativity, curiosity, and calm — it’s good for learning, and it’s good for the soul.

And remember:

The more you draw, the better you will get at it.
