Milestone Maths Homeschool Curriculum: Parent Review Level C1

Our Experience Using Milestone Maths

In Term 4 of 2025, we accepted the opportunity to complete a Milestone Maths review. I was nervous because Dillon was in his final term of Grade 1, and the C1 book is designed to begin in Term 2 of Grade 2.

The program promotes itself as an “open and go” system, which sounded perfect for parents like me who are juggling more than one student.

When the package arrived, Dilly was very excited to receive his booklet, especially because it included the Sumstix. Even though he didn’t really know what they were (and honestly, neither did I), it added to the excitement of starting something new.

Lesson Structure and Daily Workload

Each lesson in the Milestone Maths book includes:

  • A lesson concept page
  • A review and practice page
  • A drill page (around 45 sums designed to stretch and develop quick maths skills)

At first glance, the three pages per lesson felt very overwhelming for Dillon. Previously, we had been using an alternative maths book, which only included one page per lesson.

We completed:

  • Four days per week
  • One lesson per day
  • Approximately 30 minutes per session
  • Longer if Dillon felt frustrated by a new concept

Over time, the structure became more familiar and manageable.

What We Loved About Milestone Maths

As a parent, I really appreciated the layout of the program.

  • The writing is large and easy to read
  • There is plenty of space for children who are still developing neat handwriting
  • The consistent lesson format builds familiarity and confidence

Dillon initially dreaded the drill page in every lesson. However, once I secretly timed him, he began to see it as a personal challenge. He started trying to beat his previous time, and it became something he felt proud of.

As he became familiar with the layout, he was able to:

  • Begin lessons independently
  • Work through pages with minimal input from me
  • Feel confident when completing review pages

That independence was a real positive for us.

Challenges We Experienced

As someone who used MAB blocks in school, I personally found the Sumstix confusing to understand. That confusion translated to Dillon whenever a lesson required us to use them.

We ended up skipping:

  • Some number puzzles
  • Certain number bond activities

I simply didn’t feel confident teaching those concepts without more guidance. There are no answer pages included, which made it difficult to check our understanding or ensure we were on the right track.

Final Thoughts on Milestone Maths

Overall, Milestone Maths is a strong program for young Australian students.

What stood out most to us:

  • The effective drill pages that build quick maths skills
  • The clear layout
  • The “open and go” design that supports busy parents

I particularly loved the drill pages and will likely incorporate something similar into our homeschool routine moving forward.

However, as a family homeschooling three students, the price point per book per term feels impractical for us long term. For that reason, we won’t be continuing with the program.

That said, this Milestone Maths review reflects our honest experience, and I can absolutely see how it would work beautifully for many families, especially those wanting a structured, open-and-go maths program for early primary years.

Homeschool Parent Natalie completed this review of Milestone Maths Level C1 with a child in Grade 2. The review period was conducted between October & December 2025.
